Idea derived from the painting, “Christina's World,” by Andrew Wyeth, 1948. In this instance, the girl is there to capture the serenity and ephemeralness of life and youth. She is confronted by the unknown; and as children are often unafraid of senseless wonder she contemplates the mystery with confidence but very little apprehension. There is a space between her and the unknown—there is no hand reaching out in either direction. I began the painting from imagination and used my studio mirror to finalise the proportions. Decadence vs. childhood freedom and playfulness.
