I am interested in abstract painting and the feelings that paintings create. This artwork uses principles of composition, design, value, color, texture, and imagination; working with materials to make abstract expressions. The expressions are inspired by memories, feelings, ideas, recurring shapes, experimentation, and their interaction with the developing artwork. I use images and items that interest me or are personal to me: Walleye fish, clam shell patterns, torn printed poetry, 11 thousand-year-old pictographs, 4 thousand-year-old undeciphered writing, circles, x’s, checkered patterns, and textures. The name for this painting, Light-Years Across The Freeways of Space-Time, is from a line in my friend Bill Herring’s poem ODE TO THE MAN WHO WROTE TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA. His writing is used as torn graphic elements in this painting. I create layers exploring how they relate to and communicate with each other.
