The story of Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi, is an immigrant story that is very relevant today. Ruth's vow of devotion is embodied as weight rather than sentiment. I set Ruth and Naomi against a shared moral landscape, rendered without idealization, emphasizing loyalty as an act of endurance rather than rescue. Left unanswered is the agency (or lack of agency) available to them in their decisions.
