Oil on linen.
36x36x1.75"
Golden light from a late afternoon sky fills my oil on linen painting "San Francisco Summer - 1059". For a number of years I lived and created my art in a loft on the sixth floor of a building on Market Street in San Francisco. Beneath me, the city breathed. The flow of historic streetcars on MUNI's F Line combined with the flux of humanity created a rich visual tapestry that directly inspired my new painting. Today, just before I wrote these thoughts on the artwork, I was able to follow the route of Streetcar #1059 on the Market Street Railway's live map. San Francisco memories flooded in as I watched the car make its way from Fisherman's Wharf, to the Ferry Building, to the Cable Car Turnaround, then past my old home and up to the Castro. Each streetcar in the San Francisco fleet is painted in historic train colors from streetcar lines across the globe. Car #1059 is painted in the orange and silver of the Boston MTA.
