I made Scratch in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic quarantine, a moment when everything felt out of control. This painting was about reclaiming agency, about marking and scratching away at the surface to find something underneath. It's an investigation into what it means to assert yourself when the world is shutting down, to leave your mark, to refuse to disappear. Using acrylic paint and mixed media, I'm asking: what does it mean to scratch, to mark, to insist on your presence? How do we create when we're confined? What power do we find in the act of making?
