As it has mentions in the epics and texts of the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Vedas, and Puranas, it can easily be said to have existed for more than 10,000 years.

It was during British rule that it got anglicized with the name "Benaras." Mark Twain said, "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together."
