In "The City," I depict the uniquely urban simultaneity of frenzied individual focus and merging together in a single buzz of energy, based on drawings from life in coffee shops and cafes. The Split Face is a continuing theme across my works of expressive figuration.

In addition to the expressive use of color contrast, I layer a variety of media to give texture contrast, combining flat matte, iridescent sparkle, and the "crumble" of oil stick and Conté. I want you to examine the painting's surface closely - I'm glad when I see viewers' noses almost up to the painting!

The City premiered at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center, February 17th - March 14th, 2026, as part of Magnum Opus 2026. I consider The City to represent the beginnings of Dynamic Divisionism.
