This work is a visual exploration of the ideal of “freedom” as symbolized by the United States, and the gap between that ideal and its reality. Fragments of pop culture and the playful notion of a “fan club” suggest how freedom can be commodified and consumed. Through this painting, I ask: Whose freedom is it? Is it a choice—or an illusion? Drawn to the brilliance of American freedom, I also confront the exclusions and contradictions that lie beneath its surface. I want viewers to reflect on their own values as they engage with the work. The United States of America Fan Club is not merely satire—it is a visual poem that holds both the weight and the lightness of the word “freedom.”
