From the garden above West Vancouver, the whole coast lies open below. It is the middle of a summer day, and the noon sun pours over the hillside until every leaf seems to glow. The garden stands full and green, tree upon tree in the deep leaf of high summer, the light catching in the canopy and turning the green to gold, with here and there a tree of deep copper-red among it. Beyond the trees the sea lies pale and calm, hazy blue under a soft golden sky, and far across the water the mountains of Vancouver Island rest in a veil of haze, low and dreaming on the horizon. A wooded point reaches into the calm. Nearer in, a ship lies quietly at anchor, while far out a speed boat hurries to its destination, drawing a thin white line across the shining water. A tiled roof shows through the branches, and flowers crowd the beds below. It is a warm and quiet noon above the sea, when the garden holds still in the light.
