Toni's Painting is named after my niece, and it captures that knowing sigh, the one you share with someone when you both understand exactly what it's like living with a 21-year-old. It's part of my 2021 Ordinary Affects series, exploring what anthropologist Kathleen Stewart calls "public feelings that begin and end in broad circulation, but they're also the stuff that seemingly intimate lives are made…" These are collective moments of horror or delight, expressed as gasps, sighs, or umms and ahhs—those small sounds we make when we recognize ourselves in a shared experience. Toni's Painting is that sigh. It's about the ordinary affects that bind us together, even in the everyday frustrations and joys of family.
