Telephone poles. Telegraph Poles. Utility Poles. Hydro Poles. By whatever name, they are and have been a part of our urban landscape. Like the railway, the poles have helped define us – carrying every thing a nation needs to survive. My 'Urban Totem' series are literal portraits of our city poles as they stand now, titled with their identification number since each one is unique and personalized. Pole # 204 sits in front of a Toronto home; the pole has become embraced by a fellow tree as if recognizing and welcoming it back to its former self. This series is painted first with a forest green background. And then - just like the cedar pole has been removed from its natural surroundings - I have removed it from the 'green forest' and transplanted it to the city for its new role.
