Mixed media on aluminum.

30x43"

Used to Be Friendly explores the quiet fracture that follows a once-close connection—the moment when warmth turns to distance and gestures no longer land the way they used to. It’s not about conflict, exactly, but about drift: when something once familiar becomes slightly off-kilter, like a rhythm you can’t quite get back.

The mirrored profiles in the composition echo conversations that used to flow easily, now tangled in misalignment. The gridwork, textured and geometric, evokes both pattern and disruption. Some areas glow with heat—reds, oranges, rust tones—while others cool into neutrality. That mix of warmth and restraint hints at memory: affection held at arm’s length, intimacy turned abstract.

Working on aluminum provided a fitting surface—firm, reflective, and hard to ignore. The material captures light in unexpected ways, casting subtle shadows that shift as you move past, much like the shifting perceptions of a relationship changed over time. Mixed media elements add complexity and nuance, layering past and present in colors that don’t quite blend but don’t fully clash either.
