Vestige layers two images I shot in Orquevaux, France: the date plaque of an old house in the village and an atmospheric photo from a remote lake far beyond the village boundaries. The plaque marks time as a human invention; the lake as timeless and bound only by the seasonal shifts of the natural world. I hand-treated each photograph with acrylic medium and gold before collaging them together because time appears concrete, but is far more fluid. A vestige is what remains as proof that something was real. This is the paradox of Albertine’s loss, the plaque marks the moment in time, something material to point to as memory, while the lake holds the deep remembering that cannot take form.
