Walking the gardens

This is a walk through the gardens near my home in West Vancouver, in the full bloom of May. Every bush is flowering — azaleas and rhododendrons in orange, rose, and soft pink — and the new leaves open fresh and sparkling green. The path winds on through dappled light and shade, and the air is warm and sweet with the scent of spring. Beyond the blooms the view opens to the sea, across to Point Grey and the hazy ridge of Vancouver Island, where a ship drifts far out on the calm blue water. There is nothing to do here but walk slowly, breathe it in, and be happy — a quiet, sunlit day in a garden at the very height of spring.
