“When the Waves Came In” behaved like the stealth rebel of the exhibition. It never demanded attention directly, never disrupted openly, never appeared particularly dramatic — and yet somehow it slowly transformed the emotional climate of the entire room. People would drift toward it without realizing they’d changed direction. Conversations softened nearby. Time stretched slightly around it. By the end of the exhibition, several paintings suspected it had been orchestrating the mood of the entire show from the beginning.
