Aithne descended from the heavens to bring light to the world and create a haven for all those who needed a safe place. Their fire blazes brightly, a beacon of love and acceptance to all who travel near, but swiftly turns to searing heat for those whose intentions are ill-fated. With Aithne's loving embrace, a refuge from the darkness has been found.
A Canadian graffiti and street artist who has been creating and deploying pieces for over a decade. Having honed her style in Windsor ON, she has relocated to Toronto after invitations to create public art pieces across the US, Australia, and recently Hamburg and Berlin.
While her work remains influenced by her years as a graffiti artist she has also begun forming a voice that is solidly rooted in a more abstracted and flowing style for canvas. Her focus is still featuring a cast of strong, empowered, sex-positive female figures that have become a trademark of her aesthetic and approach.
She has been a member of internationally recognized graffiti crews, but is currently working solo to further develop her personal voice and approach. (Of course not completely solo, as her rescue dog can always be found close by!)
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My work is an expression of an intersectional feminist stance and a refusal to allow the female form and sexuality to be hidden or dictated by the male gaze.
Even while strictly painting graffiti pieces I always felt a draw towards creating characters, and so over time began to develop my own. More than a decade later that development has continued into a break from what I used to see as “the rules”, into the free and flowing style that exists today.
These figures are more abstracted, but still carry the intent I have been inspired by throughout my career: to show viewers how every body is beautiful; perfect exactly the way it is and that there is no space for shame. And that this is true for everyone whether cis, trans or somewhere in between, displaying it to the world or covering it up, living with disability, scars or anything else: your body is a glorious thing worthy of love.
