Gatineau based artist Bette Belanger has been honing her skills in observing and painting nature for over 20 years. Originally a Watercolourist, Bette has changed mediums to oil and works in an alla prima style. Her growth and development as an artist has come from her continual applied curiosity and exploration of painting. Bette is a self-taught artist and her work is predominantly plein aire. She likes to explore the scenery of Georgian Bay where she grew up, along with the Outaouais and Ottawa area where she now lives. She often develops her smaller plein aire paintings into larger studio works.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My art explores the rugged diversity found in the North American landscape in an impressionistic style. I use oils alla prima when painting en plein aire to keep the sketch fresh and immediate.
I find painting outdoors very addictive. The pursuit of capturing the landscape as you see it is always a struggle and challenge. I feel that this is translated to my work through my brush strokes. The light changes fast so you need to work quickly. Decipher the scene compose it and paint. There is no time for anything else. I am driven to paint on a daily basis throughout the year.
When I am not painting outdoors I will develop my smaller sketches into larger studio works.
Currently, my work is being exhibited at Electric Street Gallery in Ottawa and I am a juried in member of the Foyer Gallery. My work has also been exhibited at Galerie d’ art Riverside in Wakefield. I have exhibited in group shows with Foyer Gallery and Art Visuels de Gatineau,. Many of my pieces are with private collectors.

Have you ever stood at the edge of a park or just walked through one seeing the glimpse of a house beyond. Did it ever make you curious what was behind the trees? This is a plein aire painting while in Britannia park.

I capture this first with a plein aire sketch then later developed it into a painting in the studio. This painting about resiliency and coming through tough times. The tree with stands the elements.

I was standing in the water painting from this vantage point. The water was a bit cool but my imagination was running out of control as I tried to capture this painting.

This painting is about the peaceful calm that looking out over water on a hot summers morning can give you. I did a couple plein aire sketches first then developed this much larger painting.

A favourite spot of mine is the Lighthouse in Killarney. It has a breath taking view that makes your heart feel free. This is a studio painting from plein aire sketches.

A studio painting from a plein aire sketch done while parked on the shoulder of this road in the winter. This highway is in the Georgian Bay area and home to me. As much as the weather can be difficult it is also beautiful.
