Nance Fleming is a Toronto-based photographer with a B.A. in English Literature from York University. She has always had a keen interest in narrative and is an occasional short-story writer. Her story, “Hope River”, was selected for the Student Award in Writing at U of T’s School of Continuing Studies and her writing has appeared in the Cootes’ Paradise Writer’s Anthology. While she’s been behind the camera capturing and recording moments for most of her adult life, in more recent years the camera has become an extension of the pen in her story-telling. She likes to think of her photographs as being akin to the first paragraph of a story: when a moment is well-captured, the image invites the viewer in. Nance has had images in three Ryerson Chang School of Photography Exhibitions, winning the Toronto Star Award at the 2018 exhibition, she has participated in the Treviso Photographic Festival in 2021, 2022, and 2023, and one of her images was featured in Michael Barclay’s book, “The Never-Ending Present: The Story of Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip”.
