Cindy Lam
Cindy Yan Lam (she/her) is a Canadian visual artist. Her current practice focuses on working with paper as a medium. Lam holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Falmouth University, UK She was awarded distinction classifications for both her final major project and for her degree. In 2024, she was the recipient of an Explore and Create grant by the Canada Council for the Arts which support her further explorations in hand papermaking. She is currently intensively studying papermaking at the Paperhouse Studio in Toronto.
When she is not making art you will find her exploring the residential streets, parks, and ravines in her neighborhood with her two beloved Samoyed dogs aka her studio mates.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My creative methods include painting, stitching (by machine and by hand), writing and hand papermaking. My work explores themes of slowness, the passage of time, of juxtapositions, and of regeneration. Much of my work incorporates methods and materials that are highly tactile and require time in their development. Through my practice I aim to counter the frenetic pace of our highly digitized age where faster is often deemed better. Many of my mixed media abstract landscapes and paintings are influenced by my daily walking practice where I attune to the many non-human lifeforms we share our planet with.

After the storm there is always a brand new day. "New Beginnings" is my wish on canvas that we all remain hopeful and positive for the future. To me, storms remind us of nature's power, beauty and ability to renew and grow.

"In Conversation" was inspired by long walks in Toronto’s many ravines and parks with my two beloved dogs. Nature helps fuel my creativity. In particular, during COVID having the time to take long walks heighten my senses, even trees without their leaves appeared to be dancing and interacting with each other.

My favourite season is autumn. I often find myself staring outside my studio window for hours on end when the cooler weather comes around and the colours start to change. This piece was inspired by a late September trip to the Haliburton area. Trees danced lakeside as they shed their green summer outfits into colourful autumn ones.

During COVID more so than any other time in my life being creative, in particular painting helped ground me and keep me in the moment. It gave me time to reflect and appreciate all the people, places and things in my life. Animals and landscapes are two focus subjects of my work but during COVID I seemed to gravitate towards landscapes more. Nature helped fuel my creativity.
"Changing Winds" was painted in the height of COVID when there was some news and hope that a vaccine was on its way. I hoped that the winds were changing, and we would be able to see loved ones again.

Nature fuels my creativity and I particularly love clouds and bodies of water. This love of sky and sea was shared by my mom. This piece was inspired by my travels with her. In my dreams we are together once again sharing laughs while looking up at the cotton candy dancing sky.
