Claudine Gévry is a multidisciplinary artist who dreams of creating a magical world where the vicissitudes of life are replaced with surprise and delight.

She is inspired by artists like American sculptor Alexander Calder, inventor of the art of mobiles, as well as technology oriented & experimental artists like Amsterdam-based Studio Drift. Living on the West Coast of Canada, Claudine’s art is greatly influenced by her environment. Nature’s fragility, its impermanence and its ability to adapt to different circumstances are among the themes nurturing her work.

Over the last few years, Claudine started integrating lighting technology in her traditional metal wire & kinetic sculptures. To help her achieve her vision in 2019 she co-founded Umbra & Lux, an innovative sculptural lighting company. Regularly exhibited in art galleries, her sculptural light installations can also be found in corporate settings like the University of British Columbia Pharmaceutical Sciences Building and in the offices of biotechnology company, AbCellera, in Vancouver.

Originally from Montreal, Claudine now lives and dreams in Vancouver, Canada.

Aluminium sculpture.

33x44"

This kinetic sculpture is inspired by the work of Alexander Calder, the American sculptor who is best known for his innovative mobiles.
Through the years I have become particularly interested in kinetic sculptures and in creating gently moving graphical structures. Mobiles' appearance is always changing. They seem to have a life of their own and they are fascinating and surprising to look at. This sculpture is even more interesting as its shapes are painted with different finishes on both sides. I used colorful oil paint on one side and partly oxidized gold and copper leaf on the other side. As the mobile moves, the gold/ copper leaf catches the ambient light in an interesting way.

This piece is titled: “Exclamation” in reference to the stylised exclamation mark shape situated in the center of the artwork.

The ‘Butterfly Effect' concept originated from Edward Lorenz's Chaos Theory. It rests on the notion that the world is deeply interconnected; one small action can have powerful unexpected consequences.

This sculpture is an assemblage of stylized renditions of butterfly wings. As the shapes move we observe the many possible arrangements they can take, none being exactly the same. This is a reminder that there are multiple possible outcomes to the actions we take and that we can never fully visualize all the possible outcomes. No matter who you are, you can meaningfully impact the world.

It has been selected for the Parker Art Salon 2023 and exhibited at Pendulum Gallery in Vancouver, BC.

Acrylic and aluminium sculpture.

32x100x18"

This kinetic sculpture is an abstract representation of a waterfall.
Shimmering pieces of aluminium, mirrors and silver acrylic pieces mimic the effect of light on suspended water particles.

This sculpture is easily suspended with a simple open hook installed in the ceiling. I recommend suspending it near a window where the mirrors can catch the sunshine and create moving reflections. Alternatively you can use a spotlight to project interesting shadows and light reflections.
