Hanji Artist; pursuing my passion of sharing Korean Art with the world
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My artistic practice is rooted in exploring identity, self-affirmation, and cultural heritage through Hanji (traditional Korean paper made from dak - the bark of mulberry trees). With its remarkable durability, able to last over a thousand years, Hanji’s resilience mirrors my own journey of healing and reconnection with my roots. This versatile material has become a powerful medium for me, reflecting the strength I aim to convey in my work.
Without formal training, I began by tearing Hanji to form abstract Korean letters, embedding positive messages like “You Matter” and “Radical Acceptance” into each piece. This self-taught process is deeply personal, transforming struggles into messages of self-love, mental health, and cultural pride. I love seeing people become emotionally moved by my work, even when they don’t understand Korean, and these connections have become a cherished part of my journey.
I have come to see that we all need reminders of hope and positivity, often in unexpected ways. I am grateful to provide that through my art, using Korean culture to uplift and inspire viewers with affirmations of hope, joy, and self-acceptance.
