Hee J. Jo

Hee J. Jo (b. 1987) is a Korean Canadian artist based in Mississauga, Ontario. Her abstract work is inspired by nature and life across different scales, from the human body to the universe. Using organic forms and layered compositions, she explores ideas of connection, change, and balance. Feminism quietly informs her recent practice, shaping how forms relate to one another rather than appearing as a direct narrative. Through abstraction, Jo creates visual spaces that reflect the interdependence of human life, the natural world, and larger systems beyond individual experience.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
In recent years, my practice has focused on the female body and natural forms. Having experienced an abdominal myomectomy and other issues, I began to consider disorders of the female reproductive system as a point of departure for connecting the body to birth, and further, to the universe. This reflection led me to observe organic forms that appear throughout nature, from microscopic cells to vast cosmic structures. I recognized visual and conceptual resemblances among these simple biomorphic forms. Through my artistic practice, I seek to investigate the relationship between the human body and the universe, and to contemplate life as a transient state—passing through the present moment, regardless of location or scale, whether understood as land, earth, or cosmos.
