ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Joan Callister
Artist Statement

Through my lens and vision, I connect with elements in my surroundings. Often these images inform my abstract painting.
I am a Canadian painter and photographer whose life is centered around the longest shoreline of the Great Lakes. Born in Sarnia, summers in Bayfield, and now in Tobermory, Lake Huron has provided me with a constant source of raw beauty and wonder from which I share my exposure, being at one with nature.
Flow state is the highly pleasurable sync between body and mind being completely absorbed in effortless momentum. I find that idealist bliss by intuitively applying paint to substrate, abstracting my environment, and capturing the immediacy of 3D emotions on to a flat surface, be that my studio floor, or creating along the Lake Huron shoreline. That intense raw and emotional experience is as vital to me as breathing. This release exposes a vulnerable, soulful, and honest expression of my source.
My art offers authentic visual poetry where my idea of beautifully different and interesting can speak to all.
I invite you to explore my work and get lost in the details.

Dusk Floral is an abstract composition where the earthy tones flow across the canvas, creating a sense of gentle movement reminiscent of twilight's soft embrace. The forms remain elusive with a suggestion of florals, inviting the viewer to explore the delicate balance between nature and abstraction. The painting captures the essence of dusk - a time when shapes and colours blur, and reality takes on a dreamlike quality.

Shadow Play is a dynamic exploration of light and shadow, crafted in harmony with the sun's journey across the sky. As the sunlight shifted, casting ever-changing shadows upon the canvas, the painting evolved, embodying the tension between light and darkness.

On the Rocks embodies a unique fusion of nature and artistry, born from the shores of Lake Huron. Raw canvas was soaked in lake water and placed upon the rugged contours of the rocks to imprint their character. A mixture of charcoal, graphite, cedar ash, ink, acrylics and enamels intertwine and stain the canvas with hues that echo the surrounding landscape. With each stroke of this immersive process, a harmonious dialogue was achieved and serves as a testament to the boundless inspiration found within the natural world.
