Maya Corona
My vibrant and bold paintings convey a sense of freedom and joy.
I am a self-taught artist who enjoys exploring techniques such as watercolours, charcoal, oil pastels, acrylics, mixed media, and digital art.
I'I love to combine realism with abstract elements in my works. I enjoy experimenting with various techniques, such as watercolours, acrylics, and mixed media, regardless of the painting's size. My works often convey a sense of freedom and exploration, reflecting my love for bold and vibrant colours.
I was born and raised in Mexico City. I discovered my renewed passion for art in Calgary after moving there in 2007.
My artwork has been displayed in numerous solo and collective exhibitions across Canada, including the Ferri Building Gallery in West Vancouver, SpanicArts, Art Commons at the +15 galleries, the Consulate of Mexico in Calgary, the McDougall Centre Art Exhibit, cSPACE King Edward, Casa Mexico, and the Kiyooka Ohe Arts Center. In 2022, I held a solo exhibition at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, showcasing my latest collection from April to August.
I've also collaborated on community projects by creating outdoor murals in partnership with communities such as Crescent Heights and Mount Pleasant. A board member of many organizations such as SpanicArts, Motive Art Academy, and Calgary Studio Tour, Mexican Woman Artist, and one of the founders of the Mexican Woman Artist Collective, I'm dedicated to giving back to the artistic community.
I co-founded Bear and Unicorn Creative Company Inc., located in Calgary, AB, where we help creatives bring their ideas to life in the world of branding & marketing.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Sometimes, I am afraid to share my progress, and then I remember that what I am going through is what others might also be experiencing, and if I can get over it, others will feel inspired and might do it too.
I am improving at avoiding the voices that tell me what I should and shouldn't do.
I love playing, trying new things, failing, and getting frustrated. I know that in the end, I've learned something, and I enjoy that process because life is a journey full of wins and setbacks, and that is the point. That is living a creative life, and is what I chose.
I prefer a creative process that flows intuitively, allowing me to focus on what feels good and works best for me.
I love capturing the beauty and wonder of the world, breaking down barriers and embracing the unpredictable, and being brave and open to new possibilities, discoveries, exploration, experimentation, self-expression, and invention, where I get to create habits and turn them into a way of being.

Meet Dodee, The Bear, a close-up exploration that unveils Doode's soulful gaze, capturing the wilderness's rugged beauty. The play of light on fur and the intensity in the bear's eyes evoke the untamed spirit of the North. This painting is a snapshot of wild elegance and invites you to witness the quiet power within the Doode's gaze.
