Karen is a contemporary landscape artist working in acrylic, and mixed media. She was born and currently lives in Toronto, Ontario. Karen’s professional life was in health care, as a nurse, and later a social worker.

As an artist with a lifelong passion, I've embraced sketchbooks, pencils, paint, pastels during my travels, and the canvas comes alive when I'm home. Music and photography have also shaped my creative path, instilling in me a deep appreciation for the connections between people, emotions, colors, and the natural surroundings.

Karen has recently started to exhibit her work.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

In my art, I defy conventional urban landscapes, choosing instead to replace city buildings with elements of nature, seamlessly blending humanity with the environment. Each stroke of the brush and every touch of the palette knife or even my own hands adds depth and texture, creating an enthralling dance of colors and movement.

With every artwork I craft, I aim to reflect the personalities and energy of the people I engage with, inviting viewers to be part of these imaginative landscapes. Join me on this artistic adventure as we immerse ourselves in the captivating beauty of interconnectedness and nature's harmonious embrace. Step into my world of art, where textures come alive, colours dance, and emotions intertwine, and let yourself be welcomed into these enchanting creations.

Striking and calming. This painting has a presence anywhere it hangs. It is a monochromatic painting in indigo, the colour of wisdom and intuition. The ground holds textures in the dark in contrast with the smooth finishes in the white groundwork.

Looking way up this birch which is standing outside of a 'door'. The colours are rich and pop through the branches. The leaves are full and reflect a fine tree in the height of the summer. Dots of colour peak through from the underpainting, providing the viewer with second glances!

A quiet night, the snow is softly drifting down over the leaves that lay on the ground - sets the scene for this painting. The fall leaves are textured at the bottom to show they still remain, despite the fresh layers of snow. The birch trees stand crisp and white in the dark blue night.

My love of nature that has not been touched is reflected in this piece. This is painted from a series of reference photos that are taken while traveling the highways within the GTA. The first layer throughout the three paintings reflects the lay of the land. Subsequent layers are built up with paint and texture to bring this painting to life with depth and interest. Standing in front of three pieces brings one into the randomness of the nature along the roadside.

The inspiration for 'The Side Of The Road' series, the reference for this piece is under the Rosedale Valley Bridge in Toronto. The wild and free growing foliage, untouched and alive with colour. Heavy texture and variances of light seeping through ignites the imagination.
