Beneath the Calm the Necessary Weight

This painting began as a work for my Ataraxia exhibition, but it resisted simple serenity. I came to understand that calm is not the absence of pressure—it is something earned through resistance.
I flipped the canvas upside down, shifting the landscape toward Ipseity, the core of selfhood. The form became a suspended mass held within an overwhelming external current. Using knives, I built the blue-white field with left-to-right strokes, suggesting forces that attempt to pull the self away. The darker mass resists.
A brief flash of ochre breaks through the stone near the edge. I think of it as the Ochre Engine—memory and inner will made visible. It is the necessary weight that allows the form to hold its ground.

Sous le calme: le poids nécessaire
Cette œuvre a d’abord été créée pour mon exposition Ataraxia, mais elle a refusé une sérénité facile. J’ai compris que le calme n’est pas l’absence de pression : il se conquiert par la résistance.
J’ai retourné la toile, déplaçant le paysage vers l’ipséité, le cœur du soi. La forme est devenue une masse suspendue, prise dans un courant extérieur écrasant. Au couteau, j’ai construit le champ bleu-blanc par des gestes de gauche à droite, évoquant les forces qui cherchent à emporter le soi. La masse sombre résiste.
Une brève percée d’ocre surgit près du bord. Je la considère comme le Moteur d’ocre : la mémoire et la volonté intérieure rendues visibles. C’est le poids nécessaire qui permet à la forme de tenir.
