In Netflix’s Kpop Demon Hunters, the hunters use the gift of song to fight against the demonic forces that terrorize their world. The energy that they emanate which drives back the demons is called “honmon”. Similarly, in Janelle Monae’s “The Archandroid” album, the metanarrative communicates dance as a form of resistance against the authoritarian powers of the world. This idea of dance and music being a form of resistance is one that struck home for me and read as a tantamount summary of black resistance in America. The combination of these two inspirations culminated in my head as: “Ghetto Honmon”. Once that phrase came to mind, the piece essentially created itself. Only 2 copies of this piece exist.
