Limited edition 1 of 2.
No. 1 to No. 10 (full series)
In my series, I navigate Barthes’ dichotomy of belonging and authenticity, seeking grace in self-portraiture without mimicry. I stage family artifacts within Delacroix’s orientalist palette, transforming Armenian-Syrian heritage into a tableau akin to his work. Technical finesse in the post-production stages, namely colour grading, emphasises a chosen aesthetic code. As both archivist and subject, I embody “the looked at image” and “the eye that looks,” crafting an empowered self-representation amidst orientalism’s complexities. The creative process sways between expressive and critical, mirroring Barthes’ conflicting languages. The serene stoicism of Delacroix’s bridal drawing is transposed, opting for a direct engagement with the viewer that asserts the subject’s presence on her significant day.
