Parkade Poetry Series

Linda Bickerton-Ross, Photographer

In the alchemy of photography, light and temperature conspire to transmute the ordinary into extraordinary, revealing the unseen through their nuanced dance. Annie Leibovitz

Parkades are the first structures to emerge from the seeming chaos of high-rise construction. Even when finished, they are drab, foreboding places to be, sometimes far beneath the warmth and safety of sunlight and people. Yet they are also the necessary guts, the ‘inside out’ of these imposing modern behemoths.

When the weather is winter grey and rainy, one of my favourite shooting locations is a parkade - in this series, buried deep within the building in which I live. The light is unforgiving – harshly fluorescent; the landscape a dull scene of textured grey and white concrete. The open gridded ceilings and motley mess of cars and trucks complete the scene. Within this setting the usual signs directing people which way to go or what to do call out for attention. I play with the shapes, the temperature and the light to create a ‘nuanced dance’ of bright and playful photographs.
