Phoenix Rising honors those who have overcome adversity. I think of an injured athlete who returns stronger and steps back onto the podium, or someone who reclaims their strength and identity after trauma. The painting was inspired by a west coast autumn sunset—an ever-shifting mosaic of colour that held my gaze for nearly an hour. In that pause, I found myself holding space for all the phoenixes out there, rising again and again.
