When cold air drifts over warm water, water at the surface evaporates, forming fog. Mountain lakes in autumn provide perfect conditions for morning fog - the air temperature at higher altitudes drops precipitously during the night, while the water remains warmer from the summer months. I took this photo of fog on Donner Lake on a cold October morning. I used a neutral density filter to darken the image without changing the color. The resultant two minute exposure softened the fog on the water’s surface and clouds in the sky, creating soft pastels.
