The Settlement explores the aftermath of a relationship ending, when possessions are divided but emotions cannot be so easily settled. She is left with wealth, land, and property, while he walks away. The painting reflects on the paradox of gaining everything materially while grieving what cannot be owned, divided, or replaced.
The Settlement questions whether material security can truly protect us from emotional vulnerability.
