Often when I work I use a 'base' layer. The base layer is distinct and lets me know when I have reached the bottom layer. It tells me not to go any further as underneath is the canvas. My base layer for this piece was an old, yellowed newspaper. As I worked, I saw the beautiful patina of the old newspaper, wanting to expose more and more of 'yesterday's news'.
