The Raw Flame, a lyric taken from a Steely Dan song, suited this piece, as if one is headed into the fiery distant sunset.
Encaustic is an ancient Greco-Roman painting medium, consisting of pigment mixed into bees-wax and a natural hardener, damar. The medium must be melted to paint with it, then fused with a torch or heat gun to adhere it to the substrate.
The flow of the pigmented, melted beeswax while painting is very much like moving clouds, wind, and water, thus my motivation to paint water against the sky. Though intended to be an abstract, I can easily see how this piece could be taken as a landscape.

Inspired by cartography, treasure maps, the "Muddy Mississippi River", and impasto painting, I painted this richly hued piece as an ode to my lifelong passion for cartography, focusing more on the ancient look of treasure maps, rather than place or time.

This piece is a reproduction of a board game cover from 1905, as saved from an antique collectors' magazine, written approximately 40 years ago. The article was about the highly collectable games and game covers, due to their macabre humour and appeal.
The grim imagery of an ancient city, set against a starry night sky worked beautifully as a silhouette background for the personified "Man in the Moon". Completed with a gorgeous painted faux "frame" of gold trim and stars, this piece is a one-of-a-kind rare glimpse into unique early 20th century pastimes.

When I was painting this piece, as is often the case working with the encaustic medium, I felt "Anything Could Happen!", so I allowed process to determine the title.
