Based on an original work by photographer Steve Forth (with permission); this stoic juvenile owl (Bubo virginianus) surveys his domain looking for his next meal. I love the contrasting yellow-orange eyes against the neutral buffs, browns, greys and blacks of the owl’s feathering. The glimpse of one powerful talon lets us know what this raptor is capable of. The swirling leaves remind me of stained glass with tree branches breaking up swatches of the sky.

Owl symbolism and meanings include wisdom, intuition, supernatural power, independent thinking, and observant listening. Owls became symbolic of intelligence because it was thought that they presaged events. Owls are great thinkers, planning the hunt with care. They are considered guardians of sacred knowledge such as weather patterns. They are important in Native Canadian lore.
