'War Games I' uncovers the ‘artwork’ of ‘young masters’; children at a stage where they proudly create art with complete freedom of purpose. We see how their mind works and how it perceives the world through their choice of subject matter. This child is having an active battle with the enemy and will, of course, always win.
As I carefully replicate the child’s artwork onto canvas at a larger scale, it is put before the viewer in a new context. It is re-assessed as being a form of pure interpretive art – it is a child’s honest attempt at realism. The process of copying the child’s original art with detail accuracy is a process that brings me insight and respect as I journey back into their thought processes. Once completed, I deface it with my own realistic art objects which not only connects me and child with the passage of time and innocence but also playfully ‘turns the tables’ by being the adult scribbling over important child documents. I pose the question – which realism is the truer artform?
Pat Dumas-Hudecki – born in Hamilton, Ontario and graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design.
I have been exhibiting my paintings since 1995 in Canada and the USA. My works have garnered many awards and may be found in private and public collections, including the Ontario Government’s permanent collection. I am a member of and serve on the executive council for the Ontario Society of Artists.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Through my different painting series I want to chronicle how the everyday objects around us transform and convey their own unique narratives. My
realistic acrylic paintings pay homage to the sweet disorder and chaos that surrounds us; they are an integral part of our living spaces whether indoors
or outdoors. I enjoy creating art that makes people take a second look at their everyday surroundings and transforms their perceptions of it.
