My name is Derek Merangh. I was born and raised in Galway, Ireland. I am currently residing in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada and I am mostly a self taught artist who has been painting since a young child. I have participated in workshops by renowned artists over the years to help develop my skills as an oil painter. I do have a love for oil painting and I tend to gravitate towards Irish and Canadian land and cityscapes. My paintings have been displayed in many local gallery type venues over the years.

Galway City, like every other town in Ireland has a skyline that is dominated by a catholic church. The colors in this piece capture the overcast mood of the weather that is typical for this western coastal town.

The Canada goose, sometimes called Canadian goose, is a large wild goose with a black head and neck, white cheeks, white under its chin, and a brown body. It is native to the arctic and temperate regions of North America, and it is occasionally found during migration across the Atlantic in northern Europe.

An historic Irish landmark.

The Four Courts is Ireland's most prominent courts building, located on Inns Quay in Dublin. The Four Courts is the principal seat of the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, the High Court and the Dublin Circuit Court.

On 16th April 1922, 200 Anti-Treaty IRA under Rory O'Connor occupied the Four Courts. Under increasing pressure from Britain, the Free State forces accepted two artillery guns and began shelling the building on 28th June. Two days later a large explosion destroyed the building, leading to the surrender of the garrison.
