ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My paintings explore the complexity and richness of texture, which I achieve by using cold wax and oil. With palette knives, rollers and solvents, I manipulate the wax in various ways, creating contrast between smooth and rough surfaces, and revealing layers of color and depth. My process is a quest for the essence of my artistic vision, which I express through a balance of calm and muted tones, punctuated by bold accents and lines.
Nature is my main source of inspiration, as I am fascinated by its endless shapes, colors and textures. I draw from my memories of being immersed in natural environments, such as the weathered patterns of cliffs, the peaceful atmosphere of forests, or the powerful force of winds and storms. These experiences inform my artistic expression, which aims to capture the beauty and dynamism of nature.

This painting is one in a series that was inspired by David Wagoner’s beautiful and meditative poem “Lost”. The poet based “Lost” on the timeless wisdom northwest coast indigenous elders derived from the natural world. The poem speaks about being lost to being found—from disconnection to connection. This is accomplished by standing still, from being present and taking comfort in nature.
