Watercolour on paper.
17.75x21.75x1.25"
"On the Rocks" is a 12"x16" watercolour on paper that I've poured my heart into, capturing the raw beauty and energy of a rugged coastal scene. At the center, there's a striking dark rock formation that caught my eye, and I wanted to surround it with crashing waves to make it the dynamic heart of the painting. I played with various shades of blue and white to bring the sea to life, aiming to infuse the water with movement and energy. The foam from the waves, which I painted with meticulous detail, is meant to enhance the sense of realism and ongoing movement.
In the background, you'll notice a calm, expansive ocean meeting a lightly clouded sky at the horizon. This adds depth and a sense of serenity that I felt was important for the scene. Smaller rock formations in the distance help to create a naturalistic atmosphere that I hope feels immersive. To capture the waves' movement, I used a loose painting style and negative painting techniques to render the spray and seafoam, aiming for a tactile, almost touchable quality. This piece truly reflects my passion for conveying the essence and energy of a rugged coastal environment through the fluid and expressive medium of watercolor.
I’m Nathan Dixon, a watercolourist & designer from Toronto. I've been drawing/painting since I could hold a pencil/brush, with over twenty years of experience specializing in watercolour.
In 2001 I studied Textile Design at Sheridan College Art and Design School. After a couple of years I realized that it was not the right path for me! In 2004 I attended George Brown College majoring in Fashion Design and graduating in 2006. I currently work as a freelance artist and designer.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My ultimate goal as an artist is to interpret my inspiration in a new and interesting way, be it a wildlife, still life or portrait.
In the last few years I have begun to experiment with painting larger, It allows me the freedom to play and express myself with colour and texture on top of my signature of combining loose wet on wet techniques with more tightly detailed work.
Even though my style and I have evolved over the years, what has remained consistent is my goal of showcasing the beauty in the world around us.
