Oil on canvas.
29x36"
This large colorful oil painting on canvas depicts a figure hiding beneath a blanket and looking directly at the viewer. Painted in the chiaroscuro style, the image of the figure is brightly lit and set before a dark, oily-black background. Representing a person who is awake during the darkest hours of the night and titled “Insomnia”, this artwork reflects the presence of night-owls and those burning the midnight oil. The skin, which is painted in shades of bright white, green, red, and blue, evokes an alien appearance and draws viewers in with a piercing gaze and triangular composition. Aslanian has a fine attention to detail, rendering the detailed gesture of each fold in the fabric and wrinkle in the skin. Viewers are invited to reflect on their own relationship to solitude and the night.
Joanna Aslanian received her bachelor's degree from Cal Poly Humboldt and her Master's degree from Adler University. She current lives and works in the suburbs of Chicago, IL.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I am an artist, therapist, and art therapist. My work reflects this by highlighting the psychological impact of art through depictions of emotional vulnerability.
Working with acrylic and oil paint on canvas, I create imagery that exposes my own vulnerability through the revealing nature of art-making. Viewers are invited to find consolation and solidarity from the universality of these human emotions—and in doing so, unveil the meaning and beauty derived through connection with others.
