Tulle, floral netting sculpture.
14x26x6.50"
The female body is a place of continual metamorphosis. Throughout a woman’s life, her body undergoes many evolutions of construction and reconstruction. These “womb” sculptures explore what can be argued as the most extraordinary bodily transformation: pregnancy and birth. Taken individually, these wombs are snapshots into the creation of life. As a whole, they show the other-worldly beauty and power it takes to create a society. This sculpture is the artist's 10th rendition.
Sara received her BFA in Sculpture from California State University Fullerton in 2017. After graduating, she participated in the Torpedo Factory Post-Grad Residency in Alexandria, Virginia. During this residency she further explored the boundaries of fiber as a medium in her art. After completing the residency, she accepted a position as the 3D Studio Manager for the Art Department at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles in 2019. While working at LMU, she found joy in working with higher education students and helping foster their artistic practice. In 2022 Sara accepted a Lab Assistant position for the Art & Architecture Department at Harold Washington College in Chicago.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Sara Roberts is a Chicago based artist specializing in mold-making, casting, and textiles. Pairing vivid, malleable, and intricately woven fabrics with blunt and rigid cast elements, her work is a metaphorical juxtaposition of the strength and vulnerability of womanhood and the female body.
