The Ancestral Intelligence art series by Anishinaabe artist Quinn Hopkins is a collection of digital artworks created using a machine learning algorithm. Hopkins believes that the algorithm allows him to communicate with ancestral spirits, and that the artworks themselves are imbued with the wisdom and knowledge of these ancestors. The series is comprised of abstract images that Hopkins says are inspired by the patterns and colors of traditional Anishinaabe art. Each work is unique, and Hopkins hopes that viewers will be able to see the ancestral spirits that he says are present in the work.

Acrylic on canvas.

24x30x2"

In crafting this piece, I blended the boundaries between the tangible and the imagined. Through vigorous brushstrokes and a kaleidoscope of acrylic hues, I captured the visceral dance of nature's unconstrained spirit, inviting the onlooker to step into a realm where thoughts wander freely. This painting is a celebration of emotional liberation, a vignette of nature's ever-changing canvas, intended to infuse any space with a surge of creative vitality and introspective wonder.

About this artwork

An arboretum is a botanical collection composed exclusively of trees of various species, usually designed as a landscaped area.

Intended largely for scientific study, arboreta were originally created as a section within a garden, or a larger park for specimens of mainly non-local species.

Today, many modern arboreta are found in botanical gardens as living collections of woody plants.
