We learn in color theory that opposite or complementary colours work well together. Blue and orange are opposites and in this painting, variations on the blues and oranges sing well together. The tension is more between the solid colours and the lines and shapes sitting on top. If you'd like a bold punch of orange, this is a good piece to choose.

I am continuing to explore a limited palette with contrast and energetic marks on the surface of the paint. Surrounded by blue skies and the fading leaves of fall I am inspired as I look out my studio window at the cottage. Nature never stops being inspirational.

I was inspired by thinking about the colour of spring. The bright yellow green and the blue skies that you can see through the trees that are just starting to leaf out. I was in my Studio in the Woods but it was in the winter. I was trying to imagine spring. Although this piece turned out to have more blues than greens, and perhaps be more watery than like the growing spring buds, I still think it has a feeling of energy that we receive in the springtime. It has many layers. I used many techniques of applying paint and then moving it around, pulling it off and covering it over in an attempt to stay loose and not too attached to any one stage.

This piece used to be called One Direction, but with a little more energy, brighter colours, but still a solid shape to anchor it, it is a strong piece. The composition is somewhat lopsided, with the bulk of the interest on the left, but with space to breathe on the right. We all have our strengths, but also our soft sides. This painting speaks to both sides of ourselves.

Hearts and flowers is a very wild painting. It is not for the faint of heart. What started out as a soft landscape painting was painted over with complementary colours of green and red, which really make each other pop. This is an exercise using mixed media, fluorescents and graffiti. It's very contemporary.

I was enjoying how the bright green shone so much more out of a dark background. I have been trying to keep loose in my recent work, but I have also gravitated to square, oval and triangle shapes. It seems to represent two sides of life - the gloom and the flip side, where we find hope, in spite of the gloom.

This was a many layered piece that started out as circles printed onto the panel using parchment paper. My process is intuitive, involving lots of back and forth. I added some collage that looked like the sun, but then it was too obvious, so it got pushed back. This piece is lively, yet the colours are analagous so they provide a gentle, calm feeling. I hope this piece brings you both energy, from the lively marks and calm from the soothing colours.

There are two pieces, each 30” x 30” on pine board. I’ve used acrylic paint and some oil pastel primarily. I spent more time at my cottage while we were in the pandemic, walking my dogs every day and enjoying the sights of nature. Nearby we have a marsh that I like to observe. Looking through tree branches in the fall at the morning light is what inspired this piece. Each piece could work independently, but I think they work best together as a diptych.

Moody Blues has soft shades of green and blue, but also has some odd shapes, an off kilter composition and bits of yellow and orange poking through. The fun and quirky bits might have something to do with my rebellion against the grey days and dismal news that we hear daily. Making art brings me some happiness, and I hope you share my sense of humor when looking at this piece.
