Jangmee Park grew up in Seoul, South Korea and has enjoyed nature and music which are both significant influences in her art. After graduating with a B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Ewha Women’s University in Korea, she moved to Canada in 2000 where she continues to create paintings and drawings to visually express her feelings of the world.
She lives in Mississauga where she is currently a resident artist at the Living Arts Centre. She is a member of the Korean Art Society of Canada and the Ontario Society of Artists. Her works have been shown in over 40 solo and group exhibitions in both Korea and Canada from 1992 to present.
She uses water-based materials, drawings, and collage to communicate her inner self and the way in which reality is experienced by both the conscious and subconscious. In her paintings, the interplay of realist and abstract images represents the intentional versus the unintentional. These mediated images act as a screen upon which the viewer may project their own experiences and imagination. Her paintings are not an end in themselves, but work as an intermediary process; a joint journey of self-discovery which she shares with others.
For Jangmee, seeing is not enough but to look beyond the physical and try to see and express what is hidden in the shapes and colours on the canvas.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Painting is a visual language that I use to communicate my inner self. Since all events are experienced by both the conscious and subconscious, I use both realistic and abstract images, the intentional and unintentional, to express this duality of experience within my paintings. Like dreams, art is a colorful blend of imagination and experience- real and
unreal. I channel my personal language of art into my abstract paintings in layers and stories, opposites and similarities, contrast and inward/outward movement shown in static form. My life, attitude, feelings, and how I see the world are reflected into my paintings. This combination of both conscious and unconsciously mediated images constitutes both a means of self expression for myself and a screen upon which the viewer may project their own experiences and imagination. My paintings are not an end in themselves, but an intermediary process in a joint journey of self discovery which I share with others.
