Clay, wood and mixed medium sculpture.
12x15x7"
This is a one of a kind piece made from raku clay and smoked fired for its desired effect.
Marlene Kawalez was born in Southern Ontario, where she lives, studies and continues to experiment with clay. She studied graphic design in Toronto and began exhibiting her sculptures in 2005. Kawalez continues her education through various workshops by gifted artists from across Canada and the United States.
In her work she experiments with different techniques and materials including clay, wood, glass and mixed media.
Her work delves into our relationship with nature and the experience of loss and longing. She does this by peeling away exterior layers to reveal internal complexities.
Over the last fourteeen year, her work has been published in books, magazines and newspaper including several features on radio, TV and Zoneone Art.
She has exhibited in solo and group shows in Canada and the U.S. Her work is in various private collections in North America and world wide.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
The purpose behind my work is to expose, express and provide insight into the raw emotions involved in the journey of life through clay, wood and glass. The application of wood and clay is essential as a direct conduit to the root of nature and our existence. Glass, in retrospect, represents the fragility of life and the continuity of movement and time.
