'War Games I' uncovers the ‘artwork’ of ‘young masters’; children at a stage where they proudly create art with complete freedom of purpose. We see how their mind works and how it perceives the world through their choice of subject matter. This child is having an active battle with the enemy and will, of course, always win.
As I carefully replicate the child’s artwork onto canvas at a larger scale, it is put before the viewer in a new context. It is re-assessed as being a form of pure interpretive art – it is a child’s honest attempt at realism. The process of copying the child’s original art with detail accuracy is a process that brings me insight and respect as I journey back into their thought processes. Once completed, I deface it with my own realistic art objects which not only connects me and child with the passage of time and innocence but also playfully ‘turns the tables’ by being the adult scribbling over important child documents. I pose the question – which realism is the truer artform?

'Lost in Transition- Etiquette' plays with the juxtaposition of old values and new; how should we behave in society - seen through the eyes of a child and playing with the customs in an old book of etiquette painted on top.

'Lost in Transition-Mes Histoires' is a diptych painting carefully replicating the incredible story (histoire) of a child’s fantasy life which they have created on the outside covers of their schoolbook. The child’s scribbles are not part of the teacher’s assignment but part of the child’s unique vision. My painting is part of a series that honours the ‘works’ of what I call Young Masters; children at a stage where they proudly create art with complete personal freedom. As I carefully paint the child’s vision onto canvas at a larger scale, I am putting that vision into a new context before the viewer so that they might re-evaluate the sincerity of the original artist. I ask the viewer which is the true work of art? Is it the child’s original work or is it my painting of it?

I value the uniqueness in a child’s ability to interpret their world through their pure, uncomplicated creative responses to life. Once completed, I deface the canvas with my own realistic art objects which not only connects me to the passage of time and innocence but also playfully turns the tables by being the adult ‘scribbling’ over important child documents. I encourage us to re-evaluate the creative spirit and honesty of children’s drawings through juxtaposition and metaphorical layering of interior domestic icons. And I pose the question; which is the truer work-of-art?

My Lost in Transition series deals with a child’s ability to interpret their world through their uncomplicated creative response to life, comparing it with an adult’s critical and realistic interpretation. Both adult and child give validity to their two-dimensional expressions, recording response and memory uniquely in their own time and place. Much as a child might scribble on an important document, I playfully reverse roles by defacing their work. I encourage us to re-evaluate the creative spirit and honesty of children’s imagery though juxtaposition and metaphorical layering of interior domestic icons. My integration of child and adult imagery connects us to the passage of time and innocence and poses the question; which is the truer work-of-art?

'Pole#37 Tecumseth & Niagara Streets' has more communications on it than its original electrical functions; street signs and directions etc.... plus the shoes on the wires themselves have added meaning.

LINESCAPES SERIES: This painting, 'LineScape II, King & Bathurst', represents a chapter in my ‘Totem’ series. With ‘LineScapes’, I look, in closer detail, at the incredible network of wires above us, intersecting the skies over our cities. I focus on the graceful, dynamic patterning they create when captured as a small section of the tangled views overhead. The results are strong, graphic abstract paintings. For each canvas, I choose a lyrical interplaying section of wires to paint. For This one, 'Linescape II', I added a layer of photo transfers of text and numbers that suggest the unheard, unseen communication and energy running through the lines. As I paint over top the photo transfers, I leave areas clear around the linework, creating an aura glowing around the lines representing the power inside.

'Linescape XXIII, Duke & Belmont Kitchener' is a major intersection in Kitchener Ontario, that has an updated 'web' structure staring down at us. Unsightly to some. But made beautiful.
