"Goose Dad" is a poignant exploration of the sacrifices made by immigrant fathers within East Asian communities in Canada. The artwork portrays a family adorned in traditional Korean attire residing in a hanok, a historical Korean dwelling. Amidst the timeless architecture, they welcome home a father whose presence is marked by Americanized clothing and modern objects—a stark juxtaposition that underscores the complexities of cultural adaptation and separation. The piece encapsulates the poignant reality of immigrant families in Canada, where prolonged periods of physical absence define the familial experience. Through evocative imagery and cultural symbolism, "Goose Dad" invites viewers to contemplate the emotional toll of transnational labor migration and the enduring resilience of familial bonds amidst cultural displacement to create pieces that highlight the beauty and bittersweet qualities of my dual identity and Korean history.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
SiHyun Vision Kim, a Korean-born Canadian artist, specializes in traditional intaglio printmaking and acrylic-gouache painting. Her artistry is deeply influenced by the duality of her Korean heritage and Canadian upbringing, which is evident in the fusion of Eastern and Western elements throughout her work, from cultural themes to artistic techniques. SiHyun's artistic mission is to create pieces that highlight the beauty and bittersweet qualities of her dual identity and Korean history.
SiHyun's portfolio ranges from traditional prints such as intaglio copper and screen prints to illustrative artworks that encapsulate the feeling of nostalgia. Notable pieces include "Goose Dad," exploring the concept of immigrant fathers who work abroad to provide for their families, and "애틋한 인사" (Heartfelt Greeting), a duo intaglio etching print that explores the poignant parallels between Shimcheong's brave leap into the Indang Sea as a sacrifice so that her blind father can regain his eyesight and my childhood departure to Canada due to my parents' work. This artwork embodies the bittersweet journey of two young girls navigating unfamiliar environments with courage and determination. Additionally, SiHyun aspires to establish a distinct artistic identity deeply rooted in her Eastern heritage, enabling her to craft artworks that authentically echo her cultural origins and resonate with a broader audience.
