Acrylic, paint marker, oil pastel on stretched canvas.
18x24x1.50"
The old ship has sailed
This new boat ain’t sound
My mind keeps trying
To find solid ground
Nostalgia sets in
My oars are awry
I do what I must
But my sea-legs aren’t spry
They tell me the past
Was in line to be fixed
But the changes we see
Should mostly be nixed
The rich getting richer
The fools still in charge
Our smiles are covered
The madness is large
We won’t stay well
By living in fear
We’ve gotten this far
Keeping loved ones near
It’s not just touch
Tho’ love will prevail
It’s the mingling of life
Isolation’s a fail
It’s time to remember
There is no more doubt
We must trust our Nature
Within and without
Jane Dickson
Jane Dickson is a mixed media painter and collage artist. She was born and raised in Southern Ontario, discovered her passion for painting while living in British Columbia, and currently makes her home on the prairies of Alberta.
Jane has exhibited her award-winning art in galleries and juried shows across the country. She has participated in Art Battles, guided painting playshops, and been featured in ArtAscent Journal. Her work can be found in homes and offices throughout Canada and the United States.
When not painting and collaging, Jane enjoys writing poetry and photographing the faces she finds in Nature.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
As a child of the sixties, I loved to colour and draw. There were no television screens or computer monitors at our house, but I was blessed with pencils and crayons.
Eventually, I grew up, forgot about art, and immersed myself in the field of natural healing. Thankfully, in my late forties and much to my surprise, I discovered the life-changing practice of intuitive painting.
This method of painting without a plan allows my imagination to run wild, and appeals to my inquisitive nature. Creating an abstract background with acrylics, I can hardly wait to stand back and see what images begin to emerge. As the hint of faces and figures appear on the canvas, I use a variety of media to develop the piece and the painted story unfolds.
I have learned that creative expression is good medicine. It can be a source of joy, a meditation, and a spiritual practice. My paintings are open to interpretation; by not censoring what shows up, I hope my work can offer insight, provide food for thought, and unlock portals to magical realms.
